Whether you’re a first-time parent or you’ve raised a child before, there’s a lot to think about when raising a little one. Changes come fast and in all forms, including baby teeth! While every growing smile is unique, it’s nice to have a general idea of what to expect. That way, you can confidently care for that precious growing smile! Read on to learn some baby teeth basics that can set your child’s oral health on the best path.
When Do Baby Teeth Erupt?
Baby teeth generally start to erupt around the 6-month mark, starting with the lower front teeth then followed by the upper front teeth. Incisors and canine teeth usually appear next, and then the first and second molars. Remember, every infant is different, and so are baby teeth eruption timetables. Some babies may not have their teeth erupt until 10-12 months, while others may show their first pearly whites closer to 5 months. All in all, your baby will likely have their full set of baby teeth by the time they are 33 months old.
When Should a Baby First Go to the Dentist?
With so much going on while raising a child, it can be easy to forget about or postpone their first dental appointment. After all, baby teeth are temporary, so surely, they don’t need attention right away! However, most parents are surprised to learn that experts recommend that a child’s first dental visit should be right around when their first tooth comes in. Baby teeth are critical for overall oral and lingual development, and they are generally at a higher risk of decay and damage thanks to their thin enamel. With a quick first-time dental visit, your family dentist can ensure your little one’s smile is in tip-top shape and give you key pointers in their oral health journey.
Are There Teething Toys I Should Avoid?
Not all teething toys or solutions are created equal. Most family and pediatric dentists recommend avoiding options like:
- Teething jewelry, like bracelets or necklaces: While cute looking, these options can pose a serious choking or strangulation risk.
- Liquid-filled or gel-filled toys or rings: Options filled with liquid or gel can be punctured by accident, allowing ingestion of chemicals or other non-safe substances.
- Numbing oral gels: Topical numbing solutions were once a very popular option, but they often contain ingredients like benzocaine or lidocaine, which can cause serious health issues for infants and small children.
Fortunately, there are plenty of safe alternatives out there. Look for products made from 100% food-grade silicone or natural rubber.
When Do I Start Brushing My Child’s Teeth?
If your baby has a tooth, you should start brushing it! You can even begin routine at-home oral hygiene before the eruption of the first tooth by gently wiping down their gums after feedings. Once that first baby tooth appears, you should start brushing it with a soft-bristled toothbrush twice a day. You can use a rice-sized “smear” of fluoridated toothpaste for maximum enamel protection. At this size, fluoride will cause no ill side-effects for your little one.
