Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Dental team member and patient reviewing dental insurance forms together

Dental insurance is based around the idea that it is better to prevent dental problems than it is to treat them. To that end, most dental insurance plans are tailored to completely cover preventive care. Note that when you use dental insurance, there is often a copay that comes out of your own pocket; also, you’ll need to meet your yearly deductible before your benefits kick in. Remember that there’s a set amount of coverage that your dental plan provides in the period of one year, and this amount gets reset once that period is up.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

It’s important to understand that dental insurance plans vary, so you should contact your insurance company directly if you’re not sure what your coverage entails. Usually, though, it will follow the lines of an 100-80-50 structure: 100 percent coverage for preventive care, 80 percent coverage for basic restorative care, and 50 percent coverage for more advanced procedures. Elective dental services (mainly cosmetic dentistry) usually don’t fall under dental insurance unless they are shown to have some sort of oral health benefit.

Our dental office is very flexible when it comes to insurance, accepting both in-network plans and out-of-network plans. However, choosing an in-network provider usually makes it easier to take full advantage of your benefits. We are in-network with Delta Dental and a number of other common plans; if you don’t see your own plan listed below, call us with your insurance information so that we can confirm whether we take it and briefly go over your benefits with you.
